August pics

These posted in reverse order...  So read this description backwards:

First, it's me packing our old house from Zoe's point of view, then it's Monika's visit, and finally Zoe's cupcake from Kick*ss Cupcakes in Somerville. Sorta random, but I just found the camera cable in the mess of moving (which still isn't over), so why not?

McCain's excellent family values

Until today, I never knew that McCain was married before or that Mr. Family Values had openly cheated on his first wife and then left her for much younger, much wealthier other woman.  Hmm, yet another reason why the McCain is not the "character" he presents himself as...  And yet another thing Obama could never get away with!  See his first wife, Carol's, interview and article here.

Dar Williams concert

Nicky & I saw Dar Williams at the Somerville Theatre on Friday. She was wonderful! And Nicky got to meet her afterwards and get her CD signed. Dar was amazingly kind and down-to-earth. So fun!

Why progressive people need to vote

I was just looking up candidates' stances on poverty for a class I'm TAing, but imagine my surprise (or not) when I saw that McCain does not even list Poverty as one of his issues and has no apparent policy platform for addressing it.  Obama's platform on poverty can be found here, and there's also a nice statement on poverty from the primary period here.

But in truth, I was surprised when I saw that McCain straight up states on his website (under issues of "human dignity & life," where one might just expect to see poverty mentioned, but alas, no) that he believes Roe v. Wade should be overturned.  I naively thought that this was the sort of thing that Democrats just said he intended to do, when really he'd just pull more funding from family planning clinics, push abstinence-only education, and make contraception harder to get - more of the same Conservative strategy.  But really, he's just straightforwardly pushing to make abortion bans constitutional again.  And with a few aging Supreme Court Justices, a McCain administration would likely have the opportunity to do just that.  Even if you're someone who doesn't believe abortion is right, you must surely realize that overturning Roe v. Wade does not actually end abortion - just pushes it underground, away from the medical establishment and toward dangerous health risks.  To further compound this specter, I heard on the radio that Palin does not believe women should have access to abortion for any reason, even in the case of rape, incest, or woman's health/life.  Most American voters, even those who are anti-abortion, tend to disagree with this harsh stance, as well as with the overturning of Roe.  Frightening.  If you're progressive or if you care for women's health.

Stressing, settling in, and enjoying

I got back to Boston on a red eye on August 22 and had 4.5 days to pack.  On the 26th, Nikhil & I signed the final papers for our house, and on the 27th, we moved in.  Exhausting!  Many thanks to Chris for his life-saving help, by the way.  On the 28th I started classes, and I didn't even know where my clothes, books, or notebooks were at that point.  By some miracle, I made it to school and my classes that day, but I still feel like I'm getting a handle on my packed schedule for the semester.  We've done a lot of unpacking (though not as much as we should) and have spent unspeakable hours in Ikea and Home Depot (and more to come this weekend, in between voluminous amounts of reading).  Not the most exciting blog post, but better than nothing...

Aprendí mucho en Méjico

I had a fantastic time in Mexico. I highly recommend the school I attended, El Bosque del Caribe in Cancun city. It was an excellent learning experience with thoughtful, skilled teachers. I learned (and remembered) so much while I was there.  I had "learned" most of the material before, but since I hadn't taken a Spanish class for 8 years, the review was much needed and very helpful.  Even though many of the students spoke English, so we spoke English after school hours, I still spent 5 hours per day speaking only Spanish. And that makes a huge difference. I also met a lot of great people and dogs there and got to see the most beautiful beaches I've ever seen. Here are a few of my photos.
Also: let's just notice how I'm finally getting time to post these since all I should be doing is packing! We're moving tomorrow! Some things never change.
